Soil Health

Investing in Soil Health

Healthy soil means healthy plants, and healthy plants equals a strong food supply and a safe environment. Golden Arable Farm is dedicated to using farming methods that enhance and preserve soil quality. Several practices are used on our farm to make it more effective, environmentally sustainable, and generate higher yields.

Crop rotation: Crop rotation has long been hailed as a farming best practice for improving soil quality, but it also has other advantages, such as increased yields. Golden Arable Farm aims is to rotate crops from year to year. Higher yields would be obtained from increasing our average plantain, cocoyam, or yam growing rotation to once every three years, enabling us to reduce total plantain, cocoyam, or yam acres grown annually.

Responsible use of crop protectants: Soil structure, temperature, weather, and other factors all have a major effect on input decisions. With all of these variations, we agree that the most sustainable farming method is to focus on one field at a time, giving each crop exactly what it requires. Using modern soil sampling methodologies and historical data, we add just the right amount of inputs to crops. Our long rotation schedule also leads to healthier fields, and a further reduction in inputs. Golden Arable Farms manages inputs in accordance with strict guidelines and advice by our experts.

More organic fertilizer: Golden Arable Farm is dedicated to responsible and sustainable growing practices. These techniques help us reduce our reliance on fertilizers and pesticides while increasing our yield. Using natural fertilizer adds organic matter to the soil and helps improve water retention and, as a result, our crop flourishes. In recent months, we have more than doubles our use of locally purchased organic fertilizers which has resulted in a reduction in phosphorus and nitrogen use by 20% and 10%, respectively.
